Now the other day we were at our hotel and we were going out, I was pretty excited taking you out for an egg coffee.

Now we went to a place that's fairly well-known here, it's got lots of reviews online.

Sadly as you're about to see in this video it wasn't the standard of coffee I'd expected, it actually was quite disappointing, lucky for you there'll be another video coming up shortly.

It's going to show you just how an egg coffee should be served but in the meantime let's get on with my first introduction to egg coffee in Hanoi Vietnam.

Okay so today I'm going to take you out for a Vietnamese egg coffee or a cà phê trứng I think they call it.

Now if you haven't had one of these before you're going to love it, you've got a choice of whether you're going to go with a hot coffee or a cold.

I've been told the cold coffee is a almost like a dessert, like an ice cream, so be quite interesting.

Vietnamese egg coffee was invented back in, I think it was 1946, there was a shortage of milk, some clever guy came up with using egg yolks to get that sort of creamy thick texture so it is a sort of coffee but it's a sort of dessert, anyway you're going to see shortly.

We're going to sit down you have a choice of what you want, whoa.

always got to be careful on the street here, the path, they have paths everywhere but they're taken up with motor scooters the whole way so the chances of you actually walking on the pathways are slim to nothing.

You really just have to walk and own your space so to speak.

Now there's a very famous Vietnamese egg coffee shop about, excuse me, about 200 yards up here go to the left, we're going up to the right, I'll put the name of this street up on the screen so you can see.

Chopsticks and you put the toothpick in here all bamboo.

All bamboo from incense.

You can see here the artist had some bamboo sticks they're like chopsticks and although he said toothpicks what he meant was incense sticks, so he's using the bamboo incense sticks because bamboo is fibrous, he's then dipping it into the charcoal and using that to apply all the finer details, on the other end of the bamboo stick he's got a little eraser on there so he can lift off to get great shadowing to create these fantastic pieces of artwork.

Now at this point I've started to lose a bit of interest in this place, I've asked at least four times whether they wouldn't mind just wiping the previous egg coffee that was all over our table, after quite some time and asking four times eventually the guy grabbed a dirty rag off of the stair banister and gave us a cursory wipe over the table, another young lad then chucked two coffees down with all the interest and finesse of a ballerina in a suit of armor and to add insult to injury the water that should be keeping the coffee nice and hot was tepid, the coffee was barely lukewarm.

All in all not a very enjoyable experience to be honest.

I'm trying to keep it real on the channel as you know and today was all about going out and trying an egg coffee in Hanoi, in Vietnam.

This place is super well rated, well it's not super, it's one of those things where everybody has been and visited i,t it's got a bit of a history and the family that owned it has just given up on the place, it's.

it's really not got any proper service, the place is filthy and it shouldn't be filthy, there's no reason.

The place is choc a block everything.

it's overly pretentious, the old fella downstairs is sweet but the kids and the family they don't really, they don't really give a damn.

The coffee was at the very best quite modest, so my first taste of egg coffee in Vietnam, not good at all.

This is Cafe Giang, it's been famous for it since 1946 but to be honest really not good.

Okay there are many coffee places up and down here, they do good coffee, this place is not good.

What I do promise you while I'm here is we're going to find the new successor to that place, somewhere where if you're coming to Hanoi, you can actually go and enjoy an egg coffee in an ambiance that feels welcoming.

So pardon me for getting a little bit irate towards the end of that video, as you saw it wasn't really what I expected.

I went down to the kitchen to try and have a little chat with them but they were just, they weren't interested they were actually making coffees up for no particular people at all, there was no sort of personal attention given to the coffee making and we were delivered in this, the floor was covered in litter and we were delivered a very lukewarm and very poor egg coffee but don't worry in the next video I'm going to show you, not far from here, just how good an egg coffee can be be in Vietnam.
